Judge Not (Matthew 7:1-5)

Sermon Series: The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7)

Sermon Title: Judge Not

Sermon Text: Matthew 7:1-5

Big Idea: We should confront each other’s sin, but only after confronting our own sin

His Command (v1-2)

What judge not is not

  1. Ignorance of sin (Luke 17:3)

  2. Tolerance of sin (1 Corinthians 5:1)

  3. Indifference toward sin (Romans 6:1,15)

  4. Cowardice toward sin (1 Corinthians 13:6)

Our judgmental heart manifests itself in:

  • Critical spirit

  • Assuming motives

  • Spreading gossip

Our state of fallen humanity should shape our humility

Reflecting on His Command (v3-4)

Why don’t you notice your own sin? (v3)

  1. NAIVE to sin

  2. Sin becomes NATURAL

  3. Sin becomes COMFORTABLE

  4. We become REBELLIOUS

How can you confront someone else’s sin without addressing your own sin? (v4)

  1. We think ‘I have my sin under control’

  2. We think ‘I am more deserving of grace’

  3. We think ‘Their sin is worse than mine’

We think too highly of ourselves and too little of our sin

Responding to His Command (v5)
