Two Responses to the Words of Jesus (Matthew 7:21-29)

Sermon Series: The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7)

Sermon Title: Two Responses to the Words of Jesus

Sermon Text: Matthew 7:21-29

Explanation (v21-23)

We’re prone to misunderstand the fruit Jesus desires and say the following to Jesus:

  • Listen to what I’ve said - because I’ve said all the right things (v21)

  • Look at who I’ve known - because I’ve known all the right people (v21)

  • Look at what I’ve done - because I’ve done all the right things (v22)

The fruit Jesus desires of us is:

  • Faithful obedience (v21) - Faithfulness to the will of God comes from obedience to the Word of God

  • Intimate relationship (v23) - Intimacy with Jesus is formed by regular relationship with Jesus

Illustration (v24-27)

  • Followers of Jesus are founded on the Word

  • Followers of Jesu are sustained by the Word

Response (v28-29)
