When You Pray (Matthew 6:5-15)

Sermon Series: The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7)

Sermon Title: When You Pray

Sermon Text: Matthew 6:5-15

Big Idea: Prayer is an intimate conversation with God.

Jesus teaches WHY we pray (v5-8)

  • Don’t pray to impress others, but to spend time with God (6:5-6)

  • Don’t pray hoping God hears what you want, but confident God already knows what you need (6:7-8)

Jesus teaches HOW to pray (v9-15)

Adoration before asking: Our Father in Heaven (v9)

3 Declarations of God

  1. Hallowed by your name (v9)

  2. Your kingdom come (v10)

  3. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (v10)

3 Petitions to Ask of God

  1. Provision (v11)

  2. Pardon (v12)

  3. Protection (v13)

Please don’t hear what Jesus is not saying.

  • Jesus is not confronting WHO we pray with

  • Jesus is not confronting WHEN we pray

  • Jesus is not confronting the WORDS we pray
