Bigs Discussion Questions
What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?
Exodus 13-15 In today’s Bible story, Moses quickly led the Israelites out of Egypt. God was with them. He led the people toward the Red Sea. Before long, the Israelites saw Pharaoh and his army coming after them. “We are going to die!” they said. “We should have stayed in Egypt!” Moses said, “Do not be afraid. God brought you here, and He will fight for you.” God told Moses what to do. He said, “Stretch out your hand over the sea.” Moses did, and the sea was divided in two. The Israelites walked through on dry ground, with walls of water on both sides. But the Egyptians were still coming! As soon as the Israelites were safely on the other side of the sea, Moses stretched out his hand again and the waters came back together, covering Pharaoh and his army. When the Israelites saw what had happened, they thanked God!
What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?
God’s power is amazing. Egypt was one of the most powerful empires the world had ever known, but they couldn’t do anything to stop God’s plans. The battle probably looked hopeless, but God turned the tides—literally! Moses stretched out his staff over the water of the Red Sea, and by God’s power the sea split in two, leaving a path of dry ground right through the middle. God can do anything He wants to do, and He always keeps His promises.
How did God’s people get across the Red Sea?
God made a way when He told Moses what to do. Moses held out his hand over the water and God parted it in half so the people could cross!
Does God keep His promises? Yes, God always keeps His promises.
Elementary Discussion Questions
Why did the Israelites say they should have stayed in Egypt?
Guide the kids to discuss the different reactions we have when we are afraid. Help them understand that despite everything God had done for them, the Israelites did not fully trust Him. They were so focused on fear of what the Egyptian army might do to them, they did not trust God’s ability and desire to protect them.
What does it mean to fear God?
Help the kids understand that the idea of fearing God isn’t quite like the kinds of fear we often think of. Fearing God means having an understanding of His power and holiness as well as knowing that we fall short of His glory. We don’t avoid God when we fear Him the way we might avoid spiders if we are afraid of spiders. We draw near to God to experience His love and mercy.
God led the Israelites in a pillar of cloud and of fire; how does God lead us today?
Help the kids consider the different ways God leads His people. Remind them that we can know God’s will for us by reading the Bible, learning about Him at church, and following the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Point out that God’s leading is different now than it was in the Old Testament, but His mercy, love, and power are unchanged.
