Bigs Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?

Exodus 15-16 In today’s Bible story, Moses led the Israelites from the Red Sea to the wilderness. The people got hungry, and they complained. “We are starving!” they told Moses. But Moses did not have any food. God said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites that they will eat meat for dinner. In the morning they will eat bread until they are full. Then they will know that I am their God.” Quail came into the camp that evening, and the people ate meat for dinner. In the morning, fine flakes like frost were on the ground. “What is it?” the Israelites asked. Moses said, “God has given you bread to eat.” The Israelites called the bread manna. God wanted His people to trust Him and obey Him. The Israelites traveled in the wilderness for many years, going wherever God told them to go. One day, they stopped to camp but they had no water. “Moses, give us something to drink,” they said. But Moses did not have any water. “God, what should I do?” Moses prayed. God showed Moses a rock and told him to hit the rock with his staff. Water came out of the rock and the people drank the water. God was with His people.

  2. What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?

God provided food and water for His people when they were hungry and thirsty. God wanted His people to know that He was their God. He wanted His people to trust and obey Him. God wanted His people to know that He was in control. In the wilderness, the people had to trust God to provide for them. God gives us what we need.

  3. What does God give you that you need? How did God give us what we need most?
God gives us everything that we need. God sent His Son, Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. God knew that we would need Jesus the most.

  4. What is worship? Worship is celebrating the greatness of God.

Elementary Discussion Questions

  1. Why did the extra manna the people collected spoil on the first five days of the week?

Help the kids think about who the people should put their trust in. If they could collect and preserve as much manna as they wanted, whenever they wanted, the people would have been tempted to trust in their own abilities to collect and store manna, instead of trusting in God’s provision for them.

  2. Why was it wrong for the people to complain?

Point out that the people’s complaints were accusations that God led them out of Egypt to kill them. They were ignoring God’s goodness and refusing to worship and honor Him. They weren’t just explaining how they felt, they were saying God was untrustworthy or cruel.

  3. Is it sin for us to complain?

Guide the kids to think about the difference between respectfully telling God about the things that make you feel frustrated, and angrily accusing God of doing something wrong. Explain that it’s not wrong to express your feelings if you do it in ways that honor God and His commands. Complaining does not honor God or show that we trust Him.
