Bigs Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?

Exodus 32-34 In today’s Bible story, Moses went up the mountain, and God talked to him. Moses was up on the mountain for a long time. The people at the bottom of the mountain were tired of waiting. Where is Moses? What is taking him so long? they wondered. The people went to Moses’ brother, Aaron. “We need a god to lead us because we do not know what happened to Moses,” they said. So Aaron collected gold from the people and made a statue of a calf for them to worship. God saw what the people were doing, and He was angry. Moses rushed down the mountain, carrying two stone tablets from God. When Moses saw the people dancing in front of the golden calf, Moses smashed the tablets at the bottom of the mountain. Then he destroyed the golden calf. The next day, Moses went back up the mountain to talk to God. Moses bowed down and worshiped God. “Lord, please go with us,” he said. “Forgive our sin, and accept us as Your people.”

  2. What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?

God is the only One who deserves our worship. He is our God and our Maker. The Israelites broke the first two commandments: Do not have other gods besides Me; and do not make an idol for yourself. They made a golden calf to worship instead of God. God was angry, but Moses asked God to forgive the people, and He did.

  3. What did the people worship instead of God?
The Israelites made a golden calf to worship instead of God. They broke the first 2 commandments: Do not have other gods besides Me; and do not make an idol for yourself.

  4. What is worship? Worship is celebrating the greatness of God.

Elementary Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think Aaron chose to make the golden calf?

Guide the kids to think about what Aaron’s motivation may have been. Perhaps Aaron was afraid the people would be angry or would attack him if he refused. Perhaps he agreed withthem and thought that Moses was gone and God was done with them. Remind them that we don’t know for sure why Aaron led the people to sin, but that thinking about his response to them can help us understand why we sometimes choose to sin.

  2. What things in your life do you sometimes idolize?

Encourage the kids to answer honestly. Be prepared to share some examples from your life, and discuss other things that people often idolize or seek above God, such as power, control, comfort, or approval.

  3. How can we redirect our worship from idols back to God?

Direct the kids to consider the role of the church in helping us see our sin. Remind kids that as we read and study God’s Word, He reveals His love to us and helps us understand who He is. When we have faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives in us to help us love and worship God.
