Bigs Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?

1 Peter 1 In today’s Bible story, Peter was a follower of Jesus. One day, he wrote a letter to remind Christians about what God had done for them. Peter’s letter encouraged Christians to live like Jesus. When a person believes God’s good news about Jesus, it changes the way that person lives. Peter wrote, “Before you trusted in Jesus, you did evil things. Jesus gave His life to save you. Now you are God’s children, so do not go back to how you used to live.” Peter also said, “Obey God. He has a better life for you.” Peter told God’s people to be holy. We can be holy because we have hope that Jesus will come again. Peter reminded believers of God’s words to the Israelites. God had said, “Be holy because I am holy.” What does it mean to be holy? Being holy means being set apart. It means being different from everyone else. As Creator, God is different from everything He made. God calls us to be different too. One way we can be like Him is by loving one another.

  2. What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?

God calls His people to be holy as He is holy. God kept His promise by sending Jesus. Jesus shows us what God is like. When we trust in Jesus, God can make us more like Him: holy, good, and loving.

  3. How does Jesus show us what God is like?

Jesus perfectly shows us what God is like because Jesus is God.

  4. What is God like? God is holy, good, and loving.

Elementary Discussion Questions

  1. What does it mean to be holy?

Start by explaining that the definition of holy is “set apart.” Guide kids to understand that God, as Creator and King of the entire universe, is unlike anything else He has created. God is completely holy; He is perfect and righteous in every way. Although some things in creation can help us understand things about God, nothing comes close to matching His power, glory, goodness, or any other attribute.

  2. How can we be holy?

Help the kids to understand that we can be holy only through faith in Jesus. When we put our faith in Jesus, we are immediately transformed into new spiritual creations, alive in Jesus. As God helps us love Him more and honor Him more each day, we become less and less like the sinful world around us.

  3. Why does God want us to be holy?

Remind the kids that everything God does is for His glory and our good. God created the world to be perfect, but it has been broken by sin. When we become holy, we show small glimpses of what God intended for the world. Holiness is good for us and glorifies God by allowing us to fulfill the purpose for which we were made.
