Bigs Discussion Questions
What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?
Joshua 2 and 6 In today’s Bible story, Joshua sent two spies into the city of Jericho. The spies stayed at the house of a woman named Rahab (RAY hab). Rahab had heard about God and wanted to help His people. She hid the two spies on her roof so the king of Jericho could not find them. Before the spies left, Rahab told them, “Please be kind to my family because I have been kind to you. When you attack Jericho, please keep us safe.” The spies agreed, and they left Jericho. Rahab tied a bright red rope in her window so the Israelites would know where she lived. Next, when the Israelites arrived, God told Joshua how to take over Jericho. The city was protected by strong walls. “March around the city one time every day for six days,” God said. “On the seventh day, march around the city seven times. The priests should blow the trumpets, and all the people should shout. Then the walls of Jericho will fall down.” Joshua obeyed God. The Israelites marched around the city every day for six days. On the seventh day, the Israelites got up early and marched around the city seven times. When the priests blew their trumpets, Joshua said, “Shout, for the Lord has given you the city!” So the people shouted, and the wall fell down. The Israelites went into the city and captured it. They kept Rahab and her family safe, and Rahab and her family lived with the Israelites from that day on.
What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?
God won the battle for His people and made Jericho’s walls fall down after the people shouted. Because of Rahab’s faith, she and her family joined God’s people. God was with Joshua. God has all power; He can do all things according to His character. Only God can perform miracles!
How did the Israelites know which house in Jericho belonged to Rahab’s family?
Rahab tied a bright red rope in her window so the Israelites would know where she lived.
What is a miracle? A miracle is something God does that usually cannot be done.
Elementary Discussion Questions
Do you think God’s battle plan seemed strange to Joshua?
Point out that Joshua saw God’s miracles in the wilderness. Joshua knew that God uses impossible circumstances to bring about His purposes. God’s plans are perfect. We can trust Him even if we don’t understand His plans.
What did Rahab risk when she chose to save the two spies? Was it worth it?
Remind kids that Jericho was Israel’s enemy. Rahab may have been considered a traitor to her people if she was found to have helped Israel. Helping Israel came at great risk to not only her life, but to Rahab’s family as well. But her faith was rewarded. Not only did Rahab get to join God’s chosen people but also the Bible tells us that Rahab played a role in God’s plan to save sinners.
How did Jericho’s defeat show God’s power and mercy?
Emphasize that God defeated Jericho in a way no one else could have. Word spread to the Israelites’ enemies that God was mighty. Rahab had faith in God, and He made her a part of His people. God graciously allowed her life to be spared.
