Bigs Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?

Ephesians 2 In today’s Bible story, Paul was a missionary and follower of Jesus. He wrote a letter to the church in Ephesus. Paul taught the believers that God takes sin seriously. First, Paul said that people are different before they trust in Jesus. He said, “Before you knew Jesus, you had no life with God because of your sins. You used to do whatever you wanted. You disobeyed God. We were all like that.” Without Jesus, we live in sin. The Bible says the fair punishment for sin is death. People who do not trust in Jesus face death of their physical bodies but they are also separated from God forever. This is very sad news. But God’s plan for people is good. Paul shared this good news: “But God is so merciful. He gave us life with Him through Jesus. He loves us so much!” Paul said that God saves sinners by grace. Paul wrote, “By His grace, God saves people who have faith in Jesus. This is a gift from God. No one is saved because of what he does. God created us, and He gives us good work to do.”

  2. What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?
God takes sin seriously. We deserve to die for our sins, but God loves us and sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. God is so merciful. God loves us and wants us to live with Him.

  3. What can we do to save ourselves from sin?

Nothing on our own. By His grace, God saves people who have faith in Jesus. This is a gift from God. No one is saved because of what he does.

  4. What is the punishment for sin? The punishment for sin is death.

Elementary Discussion Questions

  1. What makes sin so serious?

Remind kids that sin is anything we think, say, or do that goes against God or His commands. Sin is rebellion against God, who is our Creator and King. Sin separates us from God because God is holy and hates sin. We cannot love God while living in a way that rejects Him. Sin is a serious problem because it is against the all-powerful Creator and King of the universe.

  2. How can we be saved from sin?

Guide kids to recognize that there is nothing we can do to save ourselves from sin. Salvation comes only through faith in Jesus. God sent His Son, Jesus, to live the perfect life we fail to live, die the death we deserved for our sins, and rise again on the third day. Jesus defeated sin and death once and for all. Salvation through Jesus is God’s free gift to everyone who repents of sin and believes that Jesus died and rose again.

  3. What does it mean to be alive in Christ?

Discuss how we can have spiritual life with God. Our hearts are dead in sin until Jesus gives us life through our faith in Him. God gives believers new hearts that want to love and obey Him. He gives believers the Holy Spirit as their Helper. Believers have this hope: One day, Jesus will come back and restore the world, and Christians will live with God forever.
