Bigs Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?

1 Samuel 13-15 In today’s Bible story, The Philistines came to fight against the Israelites. They had more soldiers, more chariots, and more horses than the Israelites. When the Israelites saw the Philistines, they were afraid. Some of the Israelites hid. King Saul wanted to ask God for help. Maybe he could make a sacrifice to God. But that was not a good idea. Saul was not allowed to make sacrifices. Only the priests were supposed to do that. Saul waited and waited for Samuel to come. Some of Saul’s soldiers started to leave, so Saul decided to make an offering to God himself. Then Samuel came. “Saul, what are you doing?” Samuel asked. “You have done the wrong thing by offering the sacrifice. You will not be king for very long. God is going to find someone else to be king, someone who obeys Him.” Some time later, the Israelites won a battle against the Amalekites (uh MAL uh kights). God told Saul to destroy everything, but Saul did not obey. He only destroyed things he didn’t want. God told Samuel, “I am sorry that I made Saul king because he does not obey Me.” Samuel told Saul, “You rejected God’s instruction, so God has rejected you as king.” Saul admitted his sin and asked for forgiveness. Samuel said, “God is going to make someone else king.”

  2. What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?

A king who would not obey God was not what God’s people needed, so God was going to choose another king to take Saul’s place. The Bible tells us that God’s rules are right and true. God is holy and good.

  3. How did Saul disobey God?

Saul decided to make an offering to God himself, but only priests were allowed to make an offering to God. God told Saul to destroy everything, but Saul did not obey. He only destroyed things he didn’t want.

  4. Why does sin separate us from God? Because God is holy, sin has broken our relationship with God.

Elementary Discussion Questions

  1. Do you find it hard to obey all of the time? Why or why not?

Remind kids that the Bible warns that we will be tempted to sin. Because of our human sinful nature, we want to do the opposite of what we should do. Encourage kids that God is full of grace and saved us from sin by sending Jesus to die on the cross and rise again.

  2. Why is obedience so important to God?

Discuss how sin separates us from God. Guide kids to consider that because God loves us, He does not want our relationship with Him to be broken by sin.

  3. What are ways we can improve at obeying?

Encourage kids to pray for God’s help in obeying. Invite kids to consider if they would choose to obey more often if they stopped and thought before acting. Suggest that kids post reminders on their walls or mirrors of instructions they struggle to obey the most.
