Bigs Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?

1 Kings 2-3 In today’s Bible story, David had been the king of Israel for a long time. Now his son Solomon was going to be the king. Before David died, he gave Solomon some special instructions. David said, “Be strong and brave. Obey God, and you will be a good king. God will keep His promise to us. Every king of Israel will come from our family.” David told Solomon to make wise choices. When David died, Solomon became the king of Israel. One night, God talked to Solomon in a dream. God said, “Solomon, ask for anything you want and I will give it to you.” Solomon said, “God, I am young, and I do not know very much about being a king. Please make me wise. Help me obey You. Help me know what is right and wrong. Help me be a good leader.” God told Solomon, “I am happy you asked for wisdom. I am going to make you more wise and understanding than anyone who has ever lived. God also said, “Because you asked for wisdom, I will also give you what you did not ask for: long life, riches, and honor.” Then Solomon woke up. He thanked God and praised Him.

  2. What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?

God blessed Solomon with wisdom, riches, long life, and honor. God had a plan to send a greater and wiser king—Jesus. Since God is our Creator, King, and Judge, wisdom comes from God.

  3. What did God give King Solomon?

God blessed Solomon with wisdom, riches, long life, and honor.

  4. What is mercy? Mercy is when God does not give us the punishment that we deserve.

Elementary Discussion Questions

  1. What did David tell Solomon before he died?

Guide kids to recall that King David told Solomon to be strong and brave. After his father’s death, Solomon was about to take on the role of king. He needed to be both strong and brave for the task ahead. (Option: Read 1 Kings 2:2.)

  2. Why did Solomon ask God for wisdom?

Remind kids that Solomon was young and didn’t know much about being a king, except what he saw from his father, King David. He wanted to know how to tell the difference between right and wrong. (Option: Read 1 Kings 3:7-9.)

  3. How can we gain wisdom and desire it more than anything else?

Encourage kids that, just like Solomon, we can ask God to give us wisdom. Reading the Bible can help us to learn how to live each day in a way that pleases God. The Holy Spirit lives in Christians and helps us desire to know more about living to please God.
