Bigs Discussion Questions
What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?
1 Kings 16-18 In today’s Bible story, Ahab became the king of Israel. He was not a good king. Ahab led the Israelites to worship false gods instead of the one true God. Ahab’s evil ways made God angry, so God sent the prophet Elijah to talk to Ahab. Elijah said, “No rain will fall in Israel for three years.” This was how God would punish the people for worshiping gods that were not real. Elijah’s words came true. Without rain, the people did not have water and they could not grow food to eat. After three years, Elijah went back to King Ahab. He told the king, “Meet me at Mount Carmel. Bring the people of Israel and the prophets who worship false gods like Baal (BAY uhl).” “You call to Baal,” Elijah said. “Ask him to send fire to your altar. I will call on the Lord. The God who answers by sending fire is the one true God.”. From morning until noon, the false prophets called out to Baal, but no one answered. They danced and cried loudly to show they loved Baal, but still Baal was silent. Then Elijah made an altar, dug a ditch around it, and put on a pile of wood. He asked for water to be poured on the wood. The altar was very wet. Elijah prayed: “Answer me, God, so that these people will know that You are God.” God answered Elijah by sending fire from the sky! The fire burned up the bull, the wood, the stones, the dust, and the water. God showed everyone that He is the one true God. The people who were watching fell to the ground. They said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” Soon the sky grew dark with clouds, and God sent rain.

Elementary Discussion Questions
Why do you think Elijah poured water on the altar three times?
Discuss how wet wood will not catch fire. Lead kids to think about how a soaking wet altar displayed God’s power even more. Help kids to understand that nothing is too difficult for God. He is able to save us from our sins and turn our hearts back to Him.
How can we believe in God without seeing a miracle, like the fire on the altar?
Remind kids that God does perform miracles, but that we don’t need a big miracle to believe in Him. Discuss how all of creation points us to God because He is the One who made everything. Help kids understand that we live by faith in Him and that faith pleases God. Lead kids to remember that God gave us the Bible so we can know Him. God also sent Jesus to die on the cross and rise from the dead. Encourage kids to think about ways God has worked in their lives.
Why did Elijah tell the people to make up their minds and either follow Baal or God?
Lead kids to understand that God does not want half of our hearts. We cannot worship something and worship God at the same time. Remind kids that God tells us in Deuteronomy 6:4-5 that we should love Him with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength.
