Bigs Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?

Matthew 3 In today’s Bible story, before Jesus came into the world, another baby was born. His name was John. John was Jesus’ cousin. When John grew up, he lived in the wilderness. John ate locusts and wild honey. He wore clothes made out of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist. John brought a message to the people in Judea: “Repent—turn from your sins—because the kingdom of heaven is near!” People from all around the land went to see John. They said they were sorry for their sins, and then John baptized them in the Jordan River. One day, John looked up and saw religious leaders coming toward him. He shouted, “Who warned you that God’s punishment is coming? If you really do want to turn from your sins, change how you live. No one is saved just by being part of Abraham’s family.” John explained, “I baptize you with water, but someone more powerful is coming after me. I am not worthy to take off His sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

  2. What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?

God gave John a message for the people in Judea: “Repent—turn from your sins—because the kingdom of heaven is near!” God sent warnings to the people of Israel through the prophets telling them to repent and turn to God. God was merciful to send prophets to warn the people.

  3. Why did people come from all over the land to see John?

People came from all over to repent and be baptized by John.

  4. What is repentance? Repentance is turning away from sin and turning to Jesus.

Elementary Discussion Questions

  1. Does baptism save us? Why did John baptize people?

Explain that baptism does not save us from our sins. Discuss how baptism is an outward expression of our faith in Jesus. Tell kids that baptism symbolizes how we have died with Christ and been raised to new life in Him. Lead kids to understand that John’s baptism symbolized repentance—it represented turning away from sin and turning to Jesus.

  2. How does John encourage you to share the gospel with others?

Encourage kids to be bold and courageous like John. Help kids understand that the good news of Jesus should be shared with everyone so that they can be saved.

  3. Why is Jesus greater than John?

Lead kids to understand that Jesus is greater than John because Jesus is the Son of God. Only Jesus can save us from our sin because He has the power to forgive sins and make us right before God. John was a messenger sent by God to tell others about Jesus. He pointed people to Jesus by telling them they needed to repent of their sin. John helps us to see that only Jesus is worthy of worship and that we should live for Him.
