Bigs Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?

In today’s Bible story, Jesus and His disciples were walking to Jerusalem. Jesus asked two of his disciples to go ahead into a village and find a donkey. The disciples went and found the donkey. When the owners asked why they were taking it, they said, “Jesus needs it.” They brought the donkey to Jesus, and the disciples laid their coats on its back. Then. lots of people came and put their clothes and palm branches on the road for Jesus. Everyone was happy and shouting, “Hosanna!” But some people told Jesus to make everyone be quiet. Jesus said, “If they are quiet, even the rocks will cry out!” As Jesus got closer to the city, He felt sad. He knew that the people did not understand who He really was. The religious leaders saw how everyone loved Jesus, and they were worried that they could not stop Him. They said “ Everyone is following Jesus!”

  2. What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?

In the Old Testament, God had promised that a special king would come riding on a donkey. God knew his people needed a savior and he sent Jesus.

  3. Why did the people praise Jesus?
They were happy to welcome Jesus as king. They shouted Hosanna! Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.

  4. What is repentance?

Repentance is turning away from sin and turning to Jesus.

Elementary Discussion Questions

  1. How is Jesus the true King?

Tell kids that the people were right to acknowledge Jesus as King, but He is an even greater King than they understood. Discuss how Jesus is King over everything because He is the Creator of the world and God in flesh. Jesus reigns supreme because God has exalted Him above everything for His perfect obedience to His plan to save people from their sin. Tell kids that we acknowledge Jesus as the true King in our lives when we follow Him and trust in Him as Savior.

  2. Why do you think some people reject Jesus?

Remind kids that the religious leaders, or Pharisees, in Jesus’ day rejected Jesus because they feared losing control over the religious practices of the people. People want to believe they are good on their own. Discuss how some people don’t want to admit their need for a Savior and follow Jesus as King.

  3. How do we worship Jesus today?

Prompt kids to think how the people praised Jesus by shouting “Hosanna” and laid down cloaks and palm branches. Discuss how we can worship Jesus through singing, how we treat others, obeying our parents or adult leaders, and so much more. Anytime we exalt Jesus above our self-interests or show we love Him most we are worshiping Him. Tell kids that anything done for God’s glory is worship.
