Sermon Series: The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7)

Sermon Title: Correcting Our Misunderstanding of Retaliation

Sermon Text: Matthew 5:38-42

Big Idea: The way of Jesus is a way of radical generosity that seeks the good of others.

1. Jesus confronts our misunderstanding of retaliation (5:38)

The Mosaic Law:

  • Promoted Justice and Retribution (Exodus 21:23-25, Leviticus 24:17-21)

  • Prohibited Vengeance and Retaliation (Deuteronomy 19:19-21)

2. Jesus corrects our misunderstanding of retaliation (5:39-42)

What we know to be clear and certain in Scripture regarding retaliation

  1. Jesus is not denying the reality and presence of evil

  2. Jesus is not condoning evil

  3. Jesus desires justice

  4. Jesus is not preventing us from responding to evil

  5. Jesus is not speaking to others, but to us

  6. Jesus is condemning violent, vengeful retaliation

  7. Jesus is calling us to a posture of non-violence that pursues peace

4 Ways the Way of Jesus Seeks the Good of Others

  1. The way of Jesus sacrifices our honor for the good of others (v39b)

  2. The way of Jesus lays down our rights for the good of others (v40)

  3. The way of Jesus endures persecution for the good of others (v41)

  4. The way of Jesus is charitable toward the needs of others (v42)
