Sermon Series: What Makes Us Family

Sermon Title: Transformed By the Gospel

Sermon Text: Galatians 1:10-24

Big Idea: The gospel transforms us into the image of Christ for the glory of God.

What the Gospel Is (v10-12)

The gospel is our motivation (v10)

The gospel is our message (v11-12)

What the Gospel Does (v13-24)

Paul’s story before Jesus (v13-14)

Paul’s honest telling of his story reveals his:

  • self-righteousness

  • brokenness

When we tell our story, we are prone to:

  • Glamorize our sinful past

  • Hide our sinful past

  • Deny our sinful past, revealing our own self-rightesouness

Paul’s story of encountering Jesus (v15-16a)

God is the subject of every verb, the one taking action

  • Setting us apart

  • Calling us to Him

  • Revealing Himself to us, both through the living Word of His Son and the written Word of Scripture

The gospel

  • Humbles us by the calling of the Father

  • Changes us by our encounter and walk with Jesus

  • Strengthens and sustains us by the power of the Holy Spirit

Paul’s story of how he was transformed by Jesus (v16b-24)

Paul’s retreat to Arabia teaches 2 important lessons

  1. The importance of being with God, setting aside time for silence and solitude

  2. The importance of reflection and preparation, not rushing to the next chapter in life

We bring glory to God when we

  • Gather together to worship

  • Go to share with others
