Anchor Church: February 2020 Newsletter ⚓

Twisting balloons is a goofy talent.

It would have been more acceptable to be at a kid’s birthday party doing it. But it’s pretty random to be standing in a Farmer’s Market in the middle of a mostly vacant mall in Urbana twisting animal balloons. But, that’s where we were - using whatever we got to try to strike up a conversation with people. We were handing out flyers as a guy walked by in a rush. Nick got his attention by saying “Hey, we’re starting a new church in the area and here’s a little bit about us.” He didn’t look too happy that Nick was interrupting his fast-paced walk to the local co-op. He stopped and took the flyer. At that moment, we had a decision to make. We could either let this guy just keep walking or we could ask him for his information and probably get rejected. Nick chose the latter - he chose the uncomfortable question. The guy wrote his number down in a hurry and rushed off.

At the end of the day, we had gotten about 20 people’s information after twisting about 200 animal balloons. That week, as we were following up with the list, we saw his name at the very top. We were confident that he wouldn’t answer his phone. He might have even given us a fake number. Out of everyone on the list, we thought he was the least likely to pick up, much less meet with us. Fast forward a week later, Nick was sitting down with him at a cafe and heard his story. He said  “I made a deal with God recently. If He puts someone in my path, I’ll take Him up on it.” After that conversation, he has been one of the most consistent people in our group. He’s not a believer, but he’s definitely searching. It’s so cool how God used a thing a silly as twisting balloons to put him in our path. God also used Nick’s courage to ask him for his information. Sometimes that’s all it takes. Sometimes, you need to be bold and just ask. You never know what God will do with it.

So today, I encourage you to ask. Ask your neighbor to come over for dinner or even just for their number so you can set something up. Ask your co-worker to get coffee. Ask your friend what they think about God. Go ahead, just ask.

This month, as you pray for us, please remember these things:

  • Pray for our next Anchor Group starting in two weeks. We’ll be splitting into two different groups to make space for more people in our home.

  • Pray for our follow up meetings from our Interest Meeting. We’ll be asking 9 people to be a part of our Launch Team very soon. Pray that they would catch the vision of Anchor Church. Pray for a space for us to meet for our monthly preview services. We met with a school today and it’s looking very promising. Pray for wisdom as we continue to navigate a lot of different decisions. Pray for the man mentioned above. Nick is meeting with him soon and we’re hoping that that conversation would lead him to Christ.

  • Praise God that we are getting a trailer this Thursday to store all of our church supplies in! A Converge church is giving it to us!Praise God for all of the connections we’ve made thus far! We are so excited for the relationships that are starting to be built.Thank you so much for your support.

We couldn't do this without you!
