Seek to show hospitality

In Romans 12:13, the Apostle Paul says, “Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.” Hospitality is our area of focus for 2020 as we seek to grow in being a more loving, welcoming, and hospitable church.

As we reflected on this verse, the question we asked ourselves in our sermon “A Welcoming Heart” was, “Do I desire to help those in need?” Will I sacrifice for the needs of others within my church?

What we see time and time again from the early church is that when there is a need within the church, it should be met by the church. We should take care of each other and bear one another’s burdens - not passively, but actively. We should "SEEK to show hospitality.

That means that hospitality might not look like what we thought. Rather,

  1. Hospitality requires vulnerability.

Hospitality requires you you to be involved in the lives oof others, seeking their needs - and allowing others into your life, so they can see your needs.

  2. Hospitality requires generosity.

Hospitality requires that we be generous with our money, home, and possessions, as well as our time and talents.

  3. Hospitality requires flexibility.

Hospitality is messy and inconvenient because we don’t get to determine when others are in need. There needs won’t always (or likely ever) align with your schedule and availability.

  4. Hospitality requires intentionality.

We need to budget for hospitality by building margin into our lives - setting aside time in our schedule and money in our budget to meet needs as they arise.

How are you going to seek to grow in hospitality this year?
