Sunday Story Time

Each Sunday we have a story time, discussion time, worship time, and close by recapping the lesson.

Story Time

Start by reading this week’s lesson to your children, or by having them read it to you. Then watch this week’s lesson video.

Read the Passage: Genesis 27-28 (ESV)

If you’re looking for the story in one of the many incredible children’s Bibles, check these out:

Watch the Video: Check out this morning’s lesson from Pastor Robin as he shares about Jacob and Esau.

Discussion Time

After watching the video, ask the following questions to further teach and apply today’s lesson.

Minis/Littles Discussion Questions

  1. Whom did Isaac plan to give his blessing to? (Esau)

  2. Whom did Isaac bless instead? (Jacob)

  3. How did Rebekah and Jacob trick Isaac into giving Jacob the blessing? (made his favorite meal, dressed Jacob in Esau’s clothes and put hair on him)

  4. How did Esau feel when he learned what Jacob had done? (angry, he wanted to hurt Jacob)

  5. Whom did Jacob see in his dream? (God, angels)

  6. What did God promise Jacob in his dream? (the same things He promised to Abraham and Isaac)

  7.  Does God keep His promises? (God always keeps His promises).

Bigs/Elementary Discussion Questions

Ask the following questions, leading discussion as suggested:

  1. Why did Jacob trick Isaac by pretending to be Esau? (to steal the blessing intended for Esau, Gen. 27:1-10)

  2. How did Esau react when he learned what Jacob had done? (Esau was angry, wept loudly, and planned to kill Jacob; Gen. 27:38,41)

  3. What did Jacob dream of as he fled from his brother Esau? (A stairway stretched to the sky with angels going up and down on it, Gen. 28:12)

  4. Why do you think God allowed Jacob to lie and cheat to get Isaac’s blessing? (Guide kids to discuss that when Rebekah was pregnant with Jacob and Esau, God said the older would serve the younger. Help kids understand that, although God hates sin, He can use the actions of sinners to bring about His perfect plans).

  5. How was God’s promise to Jacob similar to His promises to Isaac and Abraham? (Guide kids to discuss the fact that God promised a large family and many blessings that would overflow and bless the world to all three men. God’s promise to Jacob was a continuation of His promises to Isaac and Abraham. This promise was kept through Jesus. Jesus is the blessing from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob’s family who blessed the whole world).

  6. How was Jesus a blessing to the whole world? (Guide kids to remember that the Bible teaches us we all are sinners in need of God’s grace. Jesus died for our sins so we could have new life with God forever. That gift of eternal life is available to the whole world, to everyone who believes).
