Bigs Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?

Job 1-42 In today’s Bible story, Job (JOHB) loved God. He wanted to follow God’s plan and do what is right. One day, God’s enemy, Satan, said to God, “Job only follows You because You bless him. If You take away everything Job has, he won’t follow You anymore.” So God gave Satan permission to take away everything Job had, but Satan was not allowed to hurt Job. Sad things began to happen to Job, and Job did not know why. Three friends visited Job. They said God was punishing Job for his sin. Then God came in a whirlwind to talk to Job. God asked Job a lot of questions. Job did not completely understand God’s plans, but he trusted God. God is mighty and strong and wise. Job was sorry for doubting God. God healed Job, and Job lived a long, happy life.

  2. What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?

At the end of Job’s story, God did come and speak to him—not to explain Job’s suffering, but to remind Job that he is too weak and too limited to fully understand God’s perspective. Because God is in control, we can trust Him with our lives. No matter what suffering or difficult times you may face, God sees it and is using it in His plans. God can use our pain to teach us to rely on Him.

  3. How can we be good friends to those who are suffering?

We can tell our friends that we don’t need to worry because God is good and does what is right. He has power over everything. Even when God allows bad things to happen, we can know He is still working His good plan.

  4. Who is in control of everything? God is in control of everything.

Elementary Discussion Questions

  1. Tell us about a time you lost something you loved. How did you respond?

In our story Job lost everything he had. God allowed Satan to take away his children, his livestock, wealth, and then his health. Job had questions for God and we often do too— especially when we go through hard times. It’s normal to have questions, but some of our questions may never be answered. We can remember Who God is. He is the creator of all things, including us, and His plans are good. He wants what is best for us. God knows that the best thing we can have is Him! He wants us to learn to trust Him even when sad things happen.

  2. Have you ever stood up for someone? Have they stood up for you? What happened?

In our story Job wanted someone to speak to God for him. He needed a mediator. Guide the kids to understand that we all need a mediator in Christ. He stands up for us and speaks to God on our behalf. (Optional: choose a volunteer to read Hebrews 7:25) Jesus prays for us everyday, so even when we don’t know what we should pray, Jesus is praying for us!

  3. Tell us about a time you didn’t get your way. How did you feel?

Help the kids understand that we often feel entitled our plans and when God has other plans we get frustrated or angry. Job didn’t understand what God was doing when He allowed Satan to take away everything Job had. It would be easy for him to be angry with God. Maybe we’ve all felt that way at times. God knows everything and sees things that we can’t see. His thoughts and plans are bigger and better than ours, and He is trustworthy.
