Bigs Discussion Questions
What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?
Genesis 37-50 In today’s Bible story, Jacob had 12 sons, but his favorite son was Joseph. Joseph’s brothers saw that Jacob loved Joseph most, and they did not like Joseph. One day, the brothers made a plan to get rid of Joseph. They sold him as a servant to some travelers going to Egypt. Then they made Jacob think that wild animals had attacked Joseph. But God was still with Joseph. In Egypt, someone told a lie about Joseph and he was even put in jail. While in jail, God enabled Joseph to understand what people’s dreams meant. When Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, had two dreams, Joseph was able to explain the dreams. Then Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of much of Egypt. Joseph did his job well, and God was with Him. One day, Joseph’s brothers went to Egypt to buy food. And they met Joseph, but they did not know it was him. Joseph said, “I’m your brother Joseph!” Joseph’s brothers were afraid he was going to punish them for what they did. But Joseph said, “You had a bad plan, and you did a bad thing. But God planned it for something good. God’s plan saved the lives of many people.”
What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?
God had a plan for Joseph’s life and used all of his troubles to bring something good to the Hebrew people. God is able to bring blessings out of hard things. Joseph understood that no matter what happened to him—good or bad, God is always with him and is always good and has a good plan.
How did God make something good out of all the bad things that happened to Joseph?
Joseph’s brothers hurt Joseph, but God had a good plan. Joseph was put in jail but God gave him the ability to understand Pharoah’s dream and Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of all of Egypt. God used Joseph’s hurt to save His people from hunger.
Who is in control of everything? God is in control of everything.
Elementary Discussion Questions
How do you usually respond when someone does something unkind? How do others respond to you when you do something unkind?
When someone does something mean to us it’s easy to get mad and want to do something equally mean right back! Is that how God wants us to respond to others? Is that how God responds to us when we sin? Because of Jesus, our sin is forgiven and we can be close with God. Since we have been forgiven, God wants us to forgive others when they hurt us.
What are some things you are good at? Why do you think God has given you talents? What special ability did God give Joseph?
That’s right, he was able to interpret dreams. God gave this ability to Joseph because Joseph was able to use it to become a high-ranking official in Egypt. God gives all of us talents, abilities, or gifts. Sometimes we don’t know what they are right away. But every ability we have is something we can use to glorify God and help others. What are some ways you can use your talents to bless other people and honor God?
How have you seen God bring something good out of a bad thing?
Sometimes bad things happen to us and we might be tempted to think that God doesn’t care or that He has forgotten about us. But that’s not true! The Bible tells us that God is always with us and that He has a plan for our life that He is working out. (Ask a volunteer to read Romans 8:26-28). God is always at work in our lives, even when we can’t see it. Remember, God is in control of everything in heaven and on earth. Nothing is outside of God’s good plan. So we can trust God to bring blessings even out of the hard things we go through.
