Bigs Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?

Judges 2 In today’s Bible story, God had led the Israelites out of Egypt. He was with them as Joshua led them into the promised land. God made a covenant with His people, saying, “I will keep My promises, but you must promise never to make an agreement with the people living in this land. They worship false gods.” The Israelites agreed, but they did not keep their word. The Israelites fell into a pattern of sin that went like this: First, they worshiped their neighbors’ false gods and this made God angry. God let an enemy king take over the Israelites. The people had to serve the king, and life was very hard. Then the Israelites remembered how happy they were when they loved God and obeyed Him. They cried out to God, “Save us!” God wanted the people to love and obey Him, so He gave them a leader called a judge to rescue them. As long as the judge was alive, the people obeyed God. But when the judge died, the Israelites disobeyed God again.

  2. What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?

God let enemies rule over His people to show them that sin makes life harder. God always helped His people. God sent a judge to rescue His people from their enemies. God sent Jesus to change His people’s hearts and save them from sin forever.

  3. Who helped the Israelites obey God for a while?

God sent a judge to rescue His people from their enemies. The judge led God’s people to worship God again. When the judge was alive, the people obeyed God’s words, but the judge could not change the people’s hearts and make them love God.

  4. What is the punishment for sin? The punishment for sin is death.

Elementary Discussion Questions

  1. Why did the generation after Joshua worship false gods?

Lead kids to discuss how the Israelites forgot what God had done for them. Previous generations had seen God’s power and faithfulness through His miracles and the leadership of Moses and Joshua. After Joshua died, the people forgot God.

  2. Why did God send judges to Israel?

Guide kids to recall that the Israelites were in a pattern of sin. God gave judges to rule the nation of Israel and save them from the enemies who repeatedly attacked them. The judges led the people to obey God. The judges helped the Israelites with their consequences of sin, but couldn’t save them from their sin. Only Jesus can save us from our sin.

  3. How can we avoid cycles of sin in our lives?

Point out that we can’t save ourselves from our sin, but God loves us and sent Jesus to save us from our sin. Everyone who has faith in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection is forgiven and made new. The Holy Spirit lives in Christians, helping us understand the Bible, remember God’s goodness, and live for His glory. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin so we don’t enjoy sin like we did before we knew Jesus.
