Bigs Discussion Questions
What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?
2 Samuel 11-12 In today’s Bible story, David was the king of Israel. One evening, David was walking on the roof of his palace. He looked out and saw a beautiful woman named Bathsheba. Bathsheba was the wife of Uriah, one of the best men in David’s army. David made up a plan. He told the leader of the army to send Uriah into the hardest part of the battle. David hoped Uriah would be killed. David’s plan worked. Uriah was killed, so David took Bathsheba into his house to be his wife. God knew the wrong things David had done. God sent Nathan the prophet to talk to David. Nathan told David a story: A traveler came to a rich man who had many animals. The rich man did not give the traveler his own animal. Instead, he took a poor man’s lamb—the only lamb the poor man had—and gave it to the traveler to eat. This story made David angry. “The rich man should be punished!” David said. “You are the man!” Nathan said. God had made David king and given him more than he needed, but David took what wasn’t his. David realized he had sinned against God.
What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story? God hates sin because it dishonors Him and hurts us and other people. God is holy, and He could not let David’s sin go unpunished. God forgave David, but he had to face some hard consequences for his sin.
What did Nathan say to David to help him realize his sin?
Nathan told David a story about a rich man. This story made David angry and he said “The rich man should be punished!” “You are the man!” Nathan said.
What is grace? Grace is when God gives us something good even when we do not deserve it.
Elementary Discussion Questions
What happens when we try to cover up our sin?
Review how David was deep in sinful choices. After he lied one time, he had to keep lying to try to cover up the first lie. Lying can lead us tell even more lies. When we try to cover up our sin, we usually end up making it worse. It is best to confess our sin and ask for forgiveness. (Option: Read 2 Sam. 12:9.)
Can we hide our sin from God?
Help kids understand that we cannot ever hide our sin from God. God always sees our hearts. God knows what we’ve done. He even knows our thoughts. God knew all of the sinful things David had done. He knows all of the sinful things that we do. Since we can’t hide from God, it doesn’t do any good to keep trying to cover it up. (Option: Read 2 Sam. 12:7-10.)
What should we do when we have sinned?
Encourage kids to follow David’s example of repentance. When we sin, we should say we are sorry for that sin. We need to tell God we’re sorry and ask for His forgiveness. If we confess our sin and turn away from it, He will forgive us because Jesus died for our sins. (Option: Read 2 Sam. 12:13.)
