Bigs Discussion Questions

  1. What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?

1 Kings 10-12 In today’s Bible story, King Solomon was the richest and wisest king on earth. He loved God, but he disobeyed God by marrying women from other nations. King Solomon’s wives led him to worship false gods. He built altars on the hill outside the city. This made God angry. God said to Solomon, “Since you have done this, I will take away the kingdom from you. You will be king the rest of your life, but when your son becomes king, he will only be king over one tribe.” And that is what happened. Solomon had a servant named Jeroboam (JER uh BOH uhm). One day, Jeroboam was walking down the road when he met a prophet. The prophet took off his coat and tore it into 12 pieces. The prophet gave Jeroboam 10 of the pieces. He said, “God is going to take the kingdom away from Solomon. God will let Solomon and his family keep a small part, but you will get the bigger part—10 tribes.” When Solomon died, his son Rehoboam (REE huh BOH uhm) became king. The people did not want to serve a king like Rehoboam. He was very mean to them. So they made Jeroboam king. Now the kingdom of Israel was divided. Jeroboam ruled over the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Solomon’s son only ruled over the Southern Kingdom of Judah.

  2. What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?

God wants us to worship only Him. God had given Solomon wisdom but Solomon still disobeyed God. God punished Solomon for disobeying and worshipping other gods. As part of His plan God sent Jesus to be the perfect King.

  3. The prophet of God tore his coat into how many pieces?

The prophet took off his coat and tore it into 12 pieces.

  4. What is mercy? Mercy is when God does not give us the punishment that we deserve.

Elementary Discussion Questions

  1. What can happen when God’s leaders don’t set a good example in worship?

Explain how unfaithful leaders can sometimes lead others astray. When Solomon was unfaithful to God, the people began to turn away as well. Solomon was the leader of God’s people, and he set up idols. The people followed after him. (Option: Read 1 Kings 11:4-6.)

  2. How did God respond to Solomon’s unfaithfulness?

Remind kids that God was angry because of Solomon’s disobedience. God punished Solomon. He tore the kingdom away from Solomon. God gave Jeroboam, a servant, most of the kingdom. (Option: Read 1 Kings 11:9-11.)

  3. Was God merciful to Solomon? If so, how?

Lead kids to discuss how God showed mercy to Solomon. God did not give Solomon the punishment he deserved. God allowed Solomon to keep a small part of the kingdom. God also told Solomon he would not experience the punishment in his lifetime. (Option: Read 1 Kings 11:12- 13.)
