Bigs Discussion Questions
What was your favorite part of today’s Bible story?
Psalm 51 In today’s Bible story, David wrote a song, or psalm. He told God he was sorry for his sin. This is what David prayed: “God, give me grace because You are always loving. God, wipe away the wrong things I have done because You really care. My sin is messy; make me clean.” David said, “I know I did the wrong thing. I disobeyed Your commands. You are right to punish sin. You are a fair judge, and You always do what is right.” David had always been a sinner, and he knew that. David wrote, “God, please help me know what is right. Take away my sin and make me new. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” David’s sin made him feel very bad. He prayed, “God, I want to hear happy sounds again. I want to have joy.” He asked God to take away his sin and guilt. Then David said, “God, create a clean heart for me. Make my spirit strong. Do not send me away, and do not take your Spirit from me.” He said, “You are the God who saves. I will sing about You and praise You. David knew that God will not turn away from anyone who wants to obey Him.
What did you learn about God in today’s Bible story?
God was right to punish sin, but God is always ready to forgive people who say they are sorry for their sin. God wants us to tell Him we are sorry for our sin and ask Him to forgive us.
Why did King David write Psalm 51?
David wrote a psalm to show that he was sorry for his sin.
What is grace? Grace is when God gives us something good even when we do not deserve it.
Elementary Discussion Questions
Did David have to write a psalm to be forgiven?
Help kids understand that writing the psalm is not what allowed David to be forgiven. David was forgiven because he confessed his sin and showed true repentance. It’s only through God’s faithfulness that David was forgiven. (Option: Read Ps. 51:1-5.)
What did David mean when he wrote, ‘wash me, and I will be whiter than snow’?
Explain that David didn’t really mean that he was dirty and needed to be washed. David didn’t mean he wanted to be painted white. David wanted God to forgive his sin and make his heart clean. Snow is white and pure. David wanted his heart to be made pure and blameless. (Option: Read Ps. 51:7.)
How can we receive God’s forgiveness?
Discuss how we receive God’s forgiveness through Jesus. God tells us to confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Jesus from the dead. When we repent and believe, we will receive forgiveness and salvation through Jesus Christ. (Option: Read Ps. 51:10-17.)
