I Am the Bread of Life

Sermon Notes

Sermon Series: I AM

Sermon Title: I Am the Bread of Life

Passage: John 6:35

Preacher: Ashley Herr

We Misunderstand WHO Jesus Is (v1-21)

We Misunderstand WHAT Jesus Offers (v2-71)

The Bread Jesus is offering:

  1. Is Himself

  2. Brings about life

  3. Is available to anyone who desires it

  4. Satisfies your deepest spiritual longings

Reflection

As you read the words of Jesus in John 6:25-65, feast on his words and allow the Spirit to stir:

  • 1. Confronting your own misunderstandings of Jesus, asking yourself

    • How have I misunderstood who Jesus is?

    • How have I misunderstood what Jesus offers?

  • 2. Correcting the image you’ve drawn of Jesus and the unmet expectations you have of Jesus

Further Study

  • Read John 6

  • Read the relevant Old Testament passages that bring about a fuller meaning of this passages

    • Exodus 3 - The Burning Bush

Sermon Footnotes

  • “Jesus has come ‘to proclaim liberty to the captives,’ but he will not become the mascot for a people’s movement of liberation.” - Leslie Newbigin (The Light has Come, p75)

  • “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on a level with teh man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a mandman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. he did not intend to.” - C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity, p52)
