Sermon Title: The Hope of the Resurrection

Passage: Acts 22:30-24:21

Preacher: Ashley Herr

Standing Trial Before the Sanhedrin in Jerusalem (22:30-23:35)

Paul defends his:

  • Character (v1)

  • Obedience to God (v5)

  • Hope in the Resurrection (v6)

Three views on our eternal existence:

  • Sadducees: none as there is no resurrection

  • Pharisees: a physically embodied eternal existence after the resurrection

  • Pagan Gentiles: a spiritually embodied eternal existence

Standing Trial Before the Roman Governor Felix in Caesarea (24:1-21)

Three charges brought against Paul (v5-6)

  • Stirring up riots (seditions)

  • Ringleader of the Way

  • Attempting to profane the temple (sacrilegious)

Paul defends against these false charges

  • Denied stirring up riots, as he came to Jerusalem to worship (v10-13)

  • Denied that the Way is a heretical sect, but a continuation of all God had said and done (v14-16)

    • I worship who you worship

    • I believe what you believe

    • I hope in what you hope (well, at least the Pharisees)

  • Denied attempting to profane the Temple, having come to purify himself (v17-18)

The Hope of the Resurrection is that:

  • All that is promised will be fulfilled

  • All who are united in Christ will be resurrected

  • All that is evil will be eradicated

  • All that is broken will be restored

Reflection

  • 1 Peter 1:3-7
